What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?

Most of us are aware that we are each a sum of our lifetime of experiences. What if those experiences remain embodied within us as different parts of the same whole? This is the underlying concept of Internal Family Systems Therapy founded by Richard (Dick) Schwartz, a former family systems therapist turned theoretical genius.

Have you ever been going about your day as usual when suddenly a song from the past comes on the radio and suddenly you are 13 years old again dancing with your friends while using hairbrushes as microphones? You just experienced the appearance of a “part” within your whole self. Now imagine that instead of a happy memory, that song brought up a sad memory that you buried deep inside to avoid thinking about. In order to keep it buried, your system has created layers of defenses that sometimes cause you to lash out toward friends and loved ones who get too close.

If this idea resonates with you — or a part of you — you might want to consider pursuing IFS therapy for yourself and your parts. My training encompasses Level 1 and several Level 2 trainings. The level 2 trainings included: Trauma and Neuroscience; Shame, Anxiety, and Depression; and Addictions and Eating Disorders.
